DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Minor flooding caused by excessive rainfall is occurring. * WHERE...Portions of north central and northwest North Carolina, including the following counties, in north central North Carolina, Surry. In northwest North Carolina, Alleghany NC and Wilkes. * WHEN...Until 1245 AM EDT. * IMPACTS...Water over roadways. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 839 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated that light to occasionally moderate rainfall is occurring across the advisory area. However, runoff from between 2.5 and 4 inches of rain that fell this afternoon continues to collect within area creeks and streams, holding them at or above bankful levels. Minor flooding will continue for the next few hours. - This includes the following streams and drainages... Big Pine Creek, Camp Creek, Cane Creek, Camp Branch, Big Bugaboo Creek, Big Sandy Creek, Christian Creek, Chestnut Creek, Brush Creek, Beaverdam Creek, Basin Creek and Bee Tree Branch. Additional rainfall amounts of locally up to 1 inch are possible over the area. This additional rain will support continued minor flooding of creeks and streams. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... North Wilkesboro... Elkin... Fairview... Jonesville... A wall cloud forms underneath the base of a cumulonimbus cloud, and can be a hotbed for deadly tornadoes.

Wall clouds are formed by air flowing into the cumulonimbus clouds, which can result in the wall cloud descending from the base of the cumulonimbus cloud, or rising fractus clouds which join to the base of the storm cloud as the wall cloud takes shape.

Wall clouds can be very large, and in the Northern Hemisphere they generally form at the southern edge of cumulonimbus clouds.

Altostratus Clouds Next Topic: Cirrocumulus Clouds

Altostratus clouds form at mid to high-level altitudes (between 2 and 7 km) and are created by a warm, stable air mass which causes water vapor to condense as it rise through the atmosphere. Usually altostratus clouds are featureless sheets characterized by a uniform color.

In some cases, wind punching through the cloud formation may give it a waved appearance, called altostratus undulatus. Altostratus clouds are commonly seen with other cloud formations accompanying them.
