DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...For the Winter Storm Warning, heavy snow. Additional snow accumulations of 4 to 8 inches. For the Winter Weather Advisory, snow expected below 3500 feet. Additional snow accumulations of 3 to 5 inches. * WHERE...For the Winter Storm Warning, portions of Siskiyou County above 3500 feet, including the Mount Shasta highlands, Black Butte Summit along Interstate 5, and Snowman Summit and Dead Horse Summit along highway 89. For the Winter Weather Advisory, elevations at and below 3500 feet including portions of I-5, Mount Shasta City, Dunsmuir, and McCloud. * WHEN...Until 5 PM PDT this afternoon. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. INSTRUCTION: * Travel is strongly discouraged because of dangerous conditions. Do not detour during winter storms. * If you must travel, keep tire chains, a flashlight, blankets, food, water, medications, and a fully charged phone with you. * The safest place during a winter storm is indoors. * A Winter Storm Warning means that severe winter weather is occurring and poses a threat to life and property. Take protective action now.

Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or
clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind.
As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their
weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.
Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures,
despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.

A mammatus cloud is a cloud with a unique feature which resembles
a web of pouches hanging along the base of the cloud.
In the United States, mammatus clouds tend to form in the warmer months, commonly
in the Midwest and eastern regions.
While they usually form at the bottom of a cumulonimbis cloud, they can also form
under altostratus, altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds. Mammatus clouds
warn that severe weather is close.
