AREAS AFFECTED: Cheyenne; Norton; Graham; Wallace; Logan; Gove; Greeley; Wichita
DESCRIPTION: Very dry and windy conditions are forecast this afternoon, leading to numerous hours of critical fire weather conditions and extreme values of the Grassland Fire Danger Index. Winds are forecast to be from the southwest for much of the day before a shift to the northwest is forecast during the late afternoon as a cold front moves into the area. Blowing dust may reduce visibilities down to a mile or less at time is possible in the Warned areas, which may create delayed response times of first responders. * AFFECTED AREA...Fire Weather Zones 004 Norton, 016 Graham, 027 Wallace, 028 Logan, 029 Gove, 041 Greeley, 042 Wichita and 254 Cheyenne. * TIMING...Until 7 PM MDT /8 PM CDT/ this evening. * WINDS...Southwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph. * RELATIVE HUMIDITY...As low as 14 percent. * IMPACTS...Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
INSTRUCTION: Avoid dragging chains behind vehicles that could create sparks. Be alert that recent fires may be able to reignite with the strong winds.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.
