AREAS AFFECTED: Lake, MN; St. Louis, MN
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues. * WHERE...In Minnesota, Lake and St. Louis Counties. * WHEN...Until 1130 PM CDT Tuesday. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Overflowing poor drainage areas. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 736 PM CDT Tuesday, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have fallen. - Additional rainfall amounts up to 1 inch are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. - Some locations that will experience flooding include... Two Harbors, Silver Bay, Beaver Bay, Thomas Lake Near Brimson, Highland Lake, Castle Danger, Gooseberry Falls State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Split Rock Lighthouse, Brimson, Tettegouche State Park, Finland, Illgen City, Little Marais, George Manitou State Park, Island Lake, Alger, Wales and Pequaywan Lake. - Flood safety information can be found at www.weather.gov/safety/flood.
INSTRUCTION: Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement and to the National Weather Service in Duluth when you can do so safely. Flooding can be reported to the National Weather Service at 1-800-685-8612.

A nimbostratus cloud is similar to a stratus cloud in its formless,
smooth appearance. However, a nimbostratus cloud is darker than a stratus cloud,
because it is thicker.
Unlike a stratus cloud, a nimbostratus cloud typically brings with it the threat
of moderate to heavy precipitation. In some cases, the precipitation may evaporate
before reaching the ground, a phenomenon known as virga.

Precipitation in the form of water droplets is called rain.
Rain generally has a tendency to fall with less intensity over a greater period
of time, and when rainfall is more severe it is usually less sustained.
Rain is the most common form of precipitation and happens with greater frequency
depending on the season and regional influences. Cities have been shown to have
an observable effect on rainfall, due to an effect called the urban heat island.
Compared to upwind, monthly rainfall between twenty and forty miles downwind of
cities is 30% greater.
