Winter Weather Advisory issued March 18 at 8:48PM AKDT until March 19 at 5:00PM AKDT by NWS Anchorage AK
AREAS AFFECTED: Cordova
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...Snow and blowing snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 3 and 8 inches. Winds gusting as high as 40 mph. Visibility as low as one half mile. * WHERE...Cordova and Tatitlek. * WHEN...From 1 AM to 5 PM AKDT Thursday. * IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. Areas of blowing snow and or snowfall rates of one inch or more per hour in heavier snow showers could significantly reduce visibility. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Bands of snow showers will move over the region late Wednesday night as easterly winds increase. Expect moderate to heavy snow showers at times early Thursday morning through Thursday afternoon. The combination of snow and wind may result in localized areas of blowing snow that could significantly reduce visibility at times. Snow showers will continue through Thursday night with additional snow accumulations possible. However, winds are expected to diminish by Thursday evening.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.
