AREAS AFFECTED: Carlton/South St. Louis; Pine
DESCRIPTION: * WHAT...For the Winter Weather Advisory, mixed precipitation expected. Total snow and sleet accumulations between 2 and 4 inches and ice accumulations around a light glaze. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph. For the Winter Storm Watch, heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 4 inches and ice accumulations around one tenth of an inch possible. * WHERE...Pine and Carlton and South St. Louis Counties. This includes the Tribal Lands of the Fond du Lac Band and the Mille Lacs Band, Hinckley and, Lena Lake areas. * WHEN...For the Winter Weather Advisory, from 1 AM Thursday to 7 AM CDT Friday. For the Winter Storm Watch, from Friday afternoon through late Saturday night. * IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Worst conditions will be closer to Lake Superior as strong winds off of the Lake will lead to higher snow totals and greater reductions in visibilities. The majority of the snowfall is expected to fall during the daytime hours. With the high sun angle and temperatures hovering just above freezing, snowfall will have a difficult time accumulating on warm surfaces leading to a slushy mess.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.
